The gothic style pew was designed by William Hay and was Queen Victoria’s royal seat with her retinue in Edinburgh. Finely carved in oak it consisted of a screen, a row of wainscot style pews seats with canopies, and panelling. It was remodelled and moved to a different location in St Giles in 1878, before being finally removed in 2010 to make way for a contemporary glazed screen, after 138 years.
